Have you ever walked down the street on a hot day, very thirsty but had this.. "I'd kill for some taste in my water" spleen? When I started to be mindful about my diet, I have realized that it's sometimes very hard to get my taste buds satisfied with pure water. And the lemon water you make in the morning gets sour so fast on hot summer days... So yeah, during such a days I've found myself standing in the convenience store drooling over those cool sweet sodas like Cola, 7up, Sprite, Welches, and others. Sometimes when there is a party I have it, but I just can't get myself drink it daily and especially not for the reason of being thirsty. We all know these are full of sugar and empty calories, many of us just don't know what can 500 ml of COLA do to your daily diet.

Let's see. Cola, 500ml, 54g of sugar, equivalent to little over 12 spoons of white sugar. Sugar-amount wise you'd do better with a Double Chocolate Loaf Cake at Starbucks, which accounts for "only" 36 grams. Calorie-wise you could get yourself a grilled fish or lean meat steak with grilled vegetable, baked potatoes chips or long brown rice and not be more than 40 calories over this one bottle of coke. Putting calories and macros into perspective like that helped and still helps me to stay on a healthy diet. But back to the topic.
So I am standing in the convenience store with all these sweet tasty drinks thinking there must be some compromise between those and a plain water! Let me introduce you to the Korean Organic Tea line I've discovered just recently. There are few brands of those out there, but I find this line so far the richest in flavor
The line is called "I'm" and it comes in 3 different flavors. Barley, Oats, and Chrysanthemum.
Let's see what makes those so good.
1. they have the label of LOCAL & ORGANIC. 2. zero added sugar 3. labeled by 0 calories 4. 410 ml for under 2000 won (buy mine in NH mart for 1200 each) 5. naturally caffeine free 6. each contains various vitamins and minerals as well
What have each of them to offer additionally?
I'm BORI - Barley
Improves blood circulation, digestion and is a powerful antioxidant. In traditional oriental medicine barley is known to help lower a fever and help people to fall asleep (finally answer to why Korean grandmothers pour liters of barley tea into the kids with cold). Contains Roasted Barley, Roasted Brown rice, Roasted corn decoction,
I'm GWIRI - Oats
After checking the ingredients I've realized that the oat version is based on the Barley tea recipe with the addition of oats and Solomon's seal decoction. Oatstraw is high in calcium. Oatstraw is also high in silica, a mineral that is largely responsible for healthy skin, hair, nails, and bones. Oatstraw is a known nervine, meaning that it soothes and nourishes the central nervous system. It may be helpful in treating anxiety, insomnia, and nervousness. Contains: Roasted oats, Roasted Barley, Roasted Brown rice, Roasted Corn, Roasted Solomon's seal
I'm GUkHWA - Chrysanthemum
Has Vitamin C in which helps ease heaviness in the head during cold and provide relief in sinusitis discomfort. Is a natural coolant and helps in lowering the temperature of the body. Is good for the detoxification of the liver and for lowering cholesterol levels. has stimulating property and helps in alerting the senses and rejuvenating the brain. Especially when eating oily foods drinking it helps ease digestion. Contains: Chrysanthemum
I especially like this line because it doesn't leave the aftertaste in my mouth as some of the other brands. And honestly, that what makes me believe the organic label. They are just the right size to be kept in a bag or purse. In summer they often come as a 1+1 event in the convenient stores.
There are other drinks in Korea as beneficial for health as those, I will sometimes get to those as well.
Try these out and let me know what you think!
